[17p-B403-11] kW-class laser pulse generation in Yb:FAP anisotropic ceramics

Anisotropic ceramic laser made of Yb:Ca35(PO4)3F (Yb:FAP) was realized. Crystalline orientation of grains in Yb:FAP ceramics was designed by quantum mechanical calculations in order to suppress birefringent scattering of anisotropic ceramics. According to this design c-axes of these grains were aligned along the perpendicular direction of the rotational magnetic field. From orientation controlled Yb:FAP ceramics, Q-switching oscillation using Cr:YAG generated 2.3-kW pulses with repetition rate of 8.1 kHz. Energy extraction density was estimated to be 0.53 J/cm3, which was comparable to high power lasers in worldwide huge laser facilities.
