We have developed a method to generate burst-mode optical pulses. An example of these pulses has a pulse width of 130ps and the burst duration of 0.8ns. This technology may find its application in the laser micro-processing and fluorescence imaging. Our basic scheme is the injection of an external CW laser light into a gain-switched laser diode (GS-LD). We confirmed that by changing the CW laser light power, the pulse width and the pulse period were changed accordingly. The advantage of this method is that the intra-burst pulse width and pulse period are controlled simply by the CW injection condition.
