We investigate saturation properties of Cr⁴⁺, Co²⁺ and Ni²⁺-doped oxide crystals in the visible region, by means of pump-probe and Z-scan measurements. In this study, Co²⁺-doped garnets are found to be a good visible saturable absorber, and we demonstrate passive Q-switching of a Pr³⁺:YLF laser at 640 nm.
