We discuss the conditions and features to be satisfied to achieve the succesful flexible coating technology making it possible to realize the functional zinc oxide (ZnO) ceramics. Specific applications that make use of surface polarity characteristics as a function include chemical sensors, plasmonic materials in the near-infrared (NIR) region, novel antibacterial materials, and the like. The main control factors are crystallographic orientation of the polycrystalline ZnO-based thin film and reactive oxygen species including peroxides, superoxide, hydroxyl radical, and singlet oxygen distributed in the film and/or on its surface.
