We report our recent advances in photoinitiator-free fabrication of microstructures made from serum albumin proteins by femtosecond laser multi-photon direct write. For the laser direct write of proteins, photoinitiator has been always used so far to enhance the polymerization process. Some of photoiniator molecules are, however, unavoidably trapped to remain inside the protein microstructure, which is definitely undesirable for biological applications. Here, we present fabrication of microstructures from pure protein without any photoinitiator by direct laser write technique. We believe that creation of pure proteinaceous microstructures by femtosecond laser direct write offers many applications in the biological cell studies, lab-on-a-chip and total analysis systems.
