Using unique properties of the discotic liquid crystals, homeotropically oriented thin films of liquid-crystalline phthalocyanine (C6PcH2) were fabricated by spin-coating. Molecular orientation in the thin film was clarified by the grazing wide angle X-ray scattering technique. Moreover, solar cells utilizing molecular oriented thin films were fabricated, and the carrier transport and photovoltaic properties were measured. The homeotropic alignment process was indicated to be effective for the solar cell applications.
