Non-contact manipulation of an object levitating in a magnetic field was demonstrated. The material used here is SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy, whose magnetic susceptibility decreases by the absorption of light. In the experiment, a small piece of SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy/polypropylene complex was put in a glass container filled with pressurized oxygen gas (20 atm), and the glass container was inserted to the bore of a superconducting magnet which can generate maximum field of 13 T. The sample levitated with the aid of magneto-Archimedes effect and moved upward when UV light was irradiated. Once the UV light was turned off, the sample moved downward. The process was repeatedly observed and reproducible.
