Photoelectrochemical reaction has attracted huge attentions as an artificial photosynthesis technology to convert solar energy to chemical energy such as hydrogen. For the efficient utilization of solar energy, development of photoelectrodes with long absorption edge wavelength is indispensable. On the other hand, the losses related to the overpotential, mass-transfer and transfer of photoexcited carriers will be significant in the case of small bandgap, long absorption edge, photoelectrodes. Thus, the development of the efficient photoelectrodes with small bandgap material is essential.
We have developed non-oxide material, such as chalcogenides, -based photoelectrodes with long absorption edge. In the process, surface modifications including multilayer structure and novel method of electrode fabrication techniques were developed. In our presentation, we will discuss about the hydrogen evolution from water and direct synthesis of methylcyclohexane, one of the promising hydrogen carriers, from toluene using water as a hydrogen source on the near-infrared responsive photoelectrodes.
