[19a-F214-4] Strong H-H repulsion induced H adsorbed structures on Pd surfaces

Koichi Kato1, Katsuyuki Fukutani1 (1.Univ. Tokyo, IIS)

Keywords:hydrogen, Pd, absorption

H atoms are absobed by fcc metals. Especially, Pd is most attractive as an H absobing metal. H atoms are most stable near the Pd surfaces. Although Interactions between H atoms in a bulk Pd are screened by valence electrons, negativelly charged H atoms on the surfaces are found to feel strong repulsion each other, resulting in adosorption energy change. This may lead to adiabatic limit and physical limit to H adsorption on metal surfaces.
