[19p-A202-7] Volume Reduction of Contaminated Soil Using High Gradient Magnetic Separation
Keywords:superconducting high gradient magnetic separation, contaminated soil, volume reduction
The amount of contaminated soil in Fukushima is estimated as 22 million cubic meter, and its volume reduction is an important issue. Currently radioactive Cs is a problem. The Cs weakly adsorbs to 1: 1 clay minerals like diamagnetic kaolinite and strongly adsorbs to 2: 1 type clay mineral like paramagnetic vermiculite. Therefore, by using superconducting high gradient magnetic separation it is possible to reduce the contaminated soil by separating only paramagnetic 2: 1 clay mineral.
