[19p-C201-19] Development of Ethylene Removal System for Fruit and Vegetable Transport Containers using Dielectric Barrier Discharge
Keywords:Ethylene, Dielectric barrier discharge, Food preservation
The ethylene gas promotes the aging of fruits and vegetables. In this study, an ethylene removal system using a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was developed and evaluated. The DBD plasma was generated by a AC high voltage power supply using high voltage transformer driven by MOS-FET switching devices. In the present experiment, the ethylene gas was diluted with gas mixture of Nitrogen and oxygen and was fed into the DBD reactor at 5 L/min gas flow rate. The experimental results show that the efficiency of ethylene removal increases with increasing initial ethylene concentration. Ozone produced by the DBD is perfectly removed using MnO2 catalyst. The ethylene concentration in the transportation container could be suppressed to less than 1 ppm using the system during 10 days preservation.
