We have studied the guiding principle for the stabilization of Ag nanoparticles in various devices on the basis of the electronic structure of the interface between metal/contaminating organic layers. It has been found that noble metals including Ag are covered with contaminating organic layers, and that the Fermi level of the former is pinned by that of the latter. After analyzing the formation and property of contaminating organic layers on Ag, we have studied the effects of control of binder, formation of SAM and AgI membranes, and light irradiation on the stability of Ag nanoparticles, and found that Ag nanoparticles could be stabilized by keeping the Fermi level of Ag nanoparticles below those of their surroundings.
