[20p-P1-1] A meta-material of refractive index less than unity by a subwavelength-in-diameter silver pipe in visible light

Keywords:silver pipe, meta-material, refractive index less than unity

Absolute value of the complex refractive index of a half wavelength-in-diameter silver pipe has been measured and found to be less than unity. This suggests that the pipe is one of the meta-materials. The silver pipe is made from a spider silk of around 260 nm in diameter clad with silver and illuminated by a plane-polarized laser of wavelength 660 nm at normal incidence. The angular distribution of the light intensity scattered by the pipe is measured and fitted using theoretical calculations based on the corresponding model. The fitting results have led to the optimum values 0.21+0.66i and uncertainty ranges of the index.
