We have investigated noninvasive blood glucose sensing using optical heterodyne detection method. This system has two features. One is that attenuation due to scattering of the effective signal intensity is small because the magnitude of the beat signal is proportional to the electric field of the transmitted light of the scattering medium. The other is that the glucose concentration in mg/dL can be measured by measuring the phase shift of the beat signal. In this report, we demonstrate the results of basic experiments concerning noninvasive blood glucose monitoring outside the body using a 785-nm light source.
