[18a-B01-3] Mathematical descriptors in materials science

Yasumasa Nishiura1 (1.Tohoku Univ. AIMR, MathAM-OIL AIST)

Keywords:persistent homology, fracture, phase field model

We present two mathematical descriptors for complex materials such as amorphous or poly-crystal structures and discuss about its usefulness and limitations. One is the characterization of static micro-structures from a topological view point, in particular, by using the persistent homology. The other is more dynamic descriptor called the “effective toughness” (ET) based on energy view point for fracture toughness. The most interesting and subtle issue is how to link microscopic classification to macroscopic performance in a natural way.
