In the field of molecular rectifiers, people have focused on organic molecules with symmetrical anchoring groups such as thiol, methylthiol, etc. There are fewer researches focused on molecules with asymmetrical anchoring groups, especially molecules using π system such as porphyrin ring as anchoring group.
We have previously revealed that perpendicularly connected porphyrin-imide structure has high rectifying ratio. In this research, we have studied porphyrin-imide 1bearing thiol and porphyrin ring as anchoring groups. The asymmetric anchoring groups will allow us to attach the molecule on gold substrate with controlled orientation by taking advantage of the strong interaction between thiol and gold. In addition to scanning tunnel microscopy break junction (STM-BJ) method, I-Vmeasurement after molecular junction detection during I(t)measurement, or so-called blinking approach was also used. The blinking approach provides similar but more direct information on molecular conductance and junction stability at certain junction conformation without the effect of tip movement during pulling process. The data obtained from both methods were clustered by machine learning to help analyzing conductance features of measured molecules and give a comprehensive result of rectifying behavior of porphyrin-imide with thiol and porphyrin anchoring groups.
