Layered rock-salt-type ABO₂ and spinel-type AB₂O₄ are essentially similar structures based on the oxygen cubic close-packed lattice. In particular, substances with Li at the A site are well studied as secondary battery materials. However, it is only LiVO₂ and LiV₂O₄ that single crystals exist in both structures with the same B cation. Moreover, there is no report on the synthesis of these thin films because it is difficult to control the Li content. Here we report the success of selective thin film growth of layered rock-salt-type LiVO₂ and spinel-type LiV₂O₄ using pulsed laser deposition (PLD).
