N-isopropylacrylamideゲル (NIPAゲル) にピレンを取りこませると, 膨潤状態と収縮状態ではそれぞれエキシマー様発光とモノマー発光が観測された。水で膨潤したゲル内部では疎水性のピレンが油滴のように集まり、反対に収縮状態においてはゲル内部が疎水性環境になって, ピレン分子が拡散したと考えられる。この挙動は可逆的でありこれまでにないタイプのクロミズムを示した。
