We study the effect of breaking the parity of a photonic crystal waveguide, designed to have odd and even modes intersecting inside the photonic bandgap. We found that that the transverse spin and orbital parts of the angular momentum couple in the very slow-light regime by means of their local currents.
Moreover we uncover that a sub-bandgap opens between bands characterized by distinct organizations of this spin-orbit coupling at the nanoscale, revealing that spin angular momentum and orbital angular momentum of light organize in structural arrangement similar to anti-ferromagnets.
