In this presentation, (1) use of plants for solving the global environmental, energy and alimental issues and (2) plant-inspired sustainable and decentrialized energy and water management system are discussed. Photosynthesis is a typical decentrialized energy production system in plants. On the other hand, wather physiology has been considered as a centrialized system collecting the liquid form of water from roots in vascular system for systemic distribution. However, recent approach using stable isotopes allowing the distinguished tracing of waters from different origins, decentrialized water uptake systems could be pbserved uniformly in the leaves and fruits in which photo-dependently controlled liquid water exchanges are allowed. These newly uncovered functions in plants would be indicative of possible future energy and water management system for manifesting the sustainable society.
