Uniaxially oriented thin films of a thermally stable phthalocyanine, tetra-tert-butyl phthalocyanine (t-BuPcH2), were fabricated by bar-coating method. The optical property and molecular packing structure of the t-BuPcH2 in the thin film were investigated. The thin film exhibited high absorption dichroic ratio of about 50 at the peak wavelength. The molecular packing structure was determined from XRD measurement; the column axis of t-BuPcH2 molecule was parallel to the bar-sweep direction, and the molecular plane was perpendicular to the column axis. In addition, X-ray rocking curve indicated high crystallinity of the thin film.
