[21a-PA1-14] Structural color analysis of a Bismuth hopper crystal using microspectrometry

Keywords:bismuth hopper crystal, interference spectra, microspectrometry

Lab-grown Bismuth crystal exhibits a very interesting intricate shape called hopper crystal, and shows beautiful iridescent colors produced by the interference of light within the oxide film on its surface.
In this study, the iridescent light reflected from a Bismuth crystal surface was investigated using microspectrometry. The reflectance spectra at several locations on a Bismuth crystal surface were measured using a spectroscopic microscope with measurement spot size of ø40μm. The optical constants of the Bismuth substrate, as well as the optical constants and thicknesses of the surface oxide layer, were determined simultaneously by fitting simulation reflectance spectra calculated from same optical model to the all of the five measured interference spectra.
