[21p-E214-2] [INVITED] Quantum Key Distribution in the Real World

Akihisa Tomita1 (1.Hokkaido Univ.)

Keywords:quantum, cryptography, certification

Quantum key distribution (QKD) systems provides information theoretically secure key between remote parties. It will guarantee the secrecy of the valuable information to be kept for a long time, such as health-care records. Over thirty years of research and development, QKD systems offer stable operation yielding secret key at the rate of several hundred bps after 50-km optical fiber transmission. The technologies have been matured to apply real world networks. However, implementation security certification is indispensable for the social deployment. The certification issues on the real devices have not been settled but studied intensively. This talk will introduce a framework of security certification on implemented QKD devices by discussing test items, methods, and criteria. If the test results fail to satisfy the criterion, the system design should be revised. Several case studies on the characterization and improvement of QKD devices will be also presented.
