[10a-M101-2] Anatomy of Large Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy Energy in Co/Ni (111) Multilayer

The phenomena of current induced magnetization switching so-called spin transfer torque (STT) effect is one of the promising application on spintronic devices such as magnetic random access memories (STT-MRAM). Co/Ni multilayer is one of the highly desirable materials for STT-MRAM. It was shown very recently that the films have a spin polarization of about 90%, which is similar to the best spintronic materials. In this work, we investigated the magnetic properties of Co/Ni (111) multilayer, based on first-principles electronic structure calculation. We discussed the electronic structure, magnetization, spin polarization, orbital magnetic moment, and magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE). MAE was estimated by summing up the MCAE and the SA from SDA. We found a large perpendicular MAE, which is in good agreement with experimental results in similar structures. This result is useful for a better understanding of magnetic properties in Co/Ni multilayers as potentially used in spintronic devices.
