In this study, polyaniline (PANI) supported gold atomic clusters electrodes were fabricated through a lucid two-step process for detecting 1-propanol and 2-propanol. The PANI was electro-polymerized onto a pretreated commercial platinum disk electrode from aniline monomers in tetrafluoroboric acid. Gold atomic clusters were deposited onto PANI/Pt electrodes by a cyclic process with a laboratory developed flow injection analysis system. For propanol oxidation reactions, the modified Au/PANI electrode showed better catalytic activity when compared with an as-prepared non-modified PANI electrode and higher catalytic efficiency when compared with bulk gold electrode. The electrodes were taken as the working electrodes in a standard three-electrode electrochemical sensor for 1-propanol and 2-propanol sensing. The Au/PANI electrodes-based sensor showed high sensitivity and fast response toward propanol oxidation reactions at room temperature. The cyclic voltammetric (CV) detection of 1-propanol showed a linear dependence of current response versus concentration from 10-5 M to 10-2 M with a sensitivity of 42.86 μA / (mM cm2) (R2=0.994). Current responses were sampled at potential of first 1-propanol oxidation peak (≈-0.04V vs SHE). The CV detection of 2-propanol also showed a quantifiable linear dependence of current response versus concentration.
