▲ [10p-Z18-3] Analysis of PCSELs considering recoupling of reflected radiative waves

The photonic crystal surface-emitting laser (PCSEL) is a semiconductor laser anticipated as a light source for next-generation applications. Recently, double-lattice PCSELs have been proposed and demonstrated to achieve a high laser brightness by weakening the effect of optical confinement by its photonic crystal resonator. This weakening of confinement has been revealed to give rise to the formation of Dirac cone-like frequency bands at the Γ point in the photonic band structure. Here, we report on the topological structure of the Γ-point eigenstates in the parameter space of radiative optical coupling involving the emission and reabsorption of radiated waves in the PCSEL. Interesting phenomena, including the emergence of an exceptional point associated with a Dirac cone, are identified and discussed. Next, a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) is considered as a means to deliberately control radiative optical coupling and thereby exploit the above phenomena in practical applications.
