Down conversion using rare-earth elements has drawn scientific attention as a technique for improving the energy conversion efficiency of photovoltaics. We have so far observed the energy transfer between Tm luminescence at 490 nm and Yb luminescence at 980 nm by co-doping Tm and Yb into ZnO nanowires. In this study, we demonstrate the growth of ZnO nanowires on Si substrates, towards application in Si-based photovoltaics, and achieve rare-earth luminescence which is comparable to sapphire substrates.
