[11a-Z28-5] Excitonic photoluminescence energy modulation of chemically functionalized semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes in various dielectric atmospheres

Defect doing to semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) though local chemical functionalization has improved their photoluminescence (PL) properties, in which red-shifted and brighter PL is observed compared to the intrinsic PL from non-doped SWNTs. Here, we observed larger energy shifts of PL from the doped sites compared to that of non-doped SWNTs when their dielectric microenvironments were varied by an organic solvent injection method. This result indicates that interactions of surrounding solvent molecules could be enhanced at the doped sites, which lead to noticeable excitonic energy variation. The exciton localization at the doped sites is considered to be a main factor to modulate the responsiveness to dielectric environments. Consequently, the defect doping technique is expected to provide a useful method for the excitonic property modulation of the SWNTs.
