An electrochemical device sometimes requires extremely severe operating condition for some materials composing the device to achieve high performance. Electrodes of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), water electrolysis (PEWEs), and enzymatic biofuel cells (BFCs) are discussed with the recently developed connected metal nanoparticle catalysts for PEFCs and PEWEs, and surface modification of carbon electrodes for BFCs.
