The effects of clay size on the mechanical properties of nanocomposite (NC) gels with organic/inorganic network structure and on the magnetic orientation of montmorillonite were investigated. The clay size dependence of Young's modulus of NC gel was complicated. Young's modulus increased with both small and large clay sizes. The magnetic birefringence of the MMT dispersion increased with increasing clay size. It was suggested that proper MMT size is important for the development of high strength NC gel with large anisotropy.
