Previously, we have proposed an Erbium-doped fiber ring laser (EDFRL) using a cascaded-chirped long period fiber grating (C-CLPG) as a wavelength selection element from the viewpoint of the sensor applications. In this paper, a σ-type EDFRL is proposed by using an optical circulator and a Faraday rotator mirror (FRM) to realize the stable sensing operation. In this configuration, the C-CLPG, sensing element, is separated from the main loop of the EDFRL, and the FRM is capable of suppression of the fluctuation effects of the polarization state of the sensor part, so that more practical applications of the sensor are expected.
