Perylene diimide (PDI), a promising candidate as a superior non-fullerene acceptor for an organic photovoltaic, has attracted tremendous attention due to the highly efficient charge-carrier properties as well as high thermal and chemical stabilities. In this work, the regioselective bromination has been expanded into efficient preparation of multiply bay-functionalized PDI by electron-donating groups. Owing to the high solubility and the lifted LUMO level as a result of the bay-functionalization, the obtained PDI gave significant advantages as an acceptor material for photovoltaic application. A solution-processed organic solar cell exhibited remarkably high open-circuit voltage (VOC) reaching 1.00 V and power conversion efficiency of 1.74%. The observed high VOC could be understood by reduction of energy offset for charge separation and non-radiative recombination.
