We report the synthesis of alternating copolymers comprising cyclopentadithiophene, thiophene, or bithiophene and benzoic acid or terephthalic acid through direct arylation polymerization followed by saponification. These polymers are used as conductive polymer binders with silicon as the anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). To improve the cycling life of silicon-based LIBs, it is important to use hydrophilic side chains, such as the -COONa group, into conductive polymer binders. Highly covered silicon-polymer composites are achieved, leading to high capacity and stability at a high charge-discharge rate in LIBs.
