To explore molecular wires, which reveal both high and well-defined conductance, are essential to achieve single-molecule devices. Herein, we present the design, synthesis and single-molecule conductance study of organometallic molecular wires with long-legged phosphine ligands. The organometallic molecular wires having biphenyl and tert-butyl biphenyl substituents on the chelate phosphine ligands have been synthesized. Single-molecule conductance study using the STM-break junction (STM-BJ) method revealed that conductance distributions for those having biphenyl skeletons were narrower than that of the phenyl derivative, whereas conductance values of them were essentially the same. Discussion on the basis of theoretical study will also be presented.
