[14p-A407-12] Simulation and Experimental studies of Structure-stability of Hot-compressed silica glass toward lower Rayleigh Scattering loss

More than 80% of the optical loss in optical fibers comes from Rayleigh scattering. Recently, it has been reported that Rayleigh scattering is suppressed in hot-compressed silica glass which was isotropically pressed at 1800 ℃ under the pressure range from atmospheric pressure to 0.2 GPa using Ar gas as pressure medium. Scattering may be further suppressed by performing higher pressure treatment. However, for the pressure higher than 0.2 GPa, the size of the homogeneous sample is limited, so that the scattering measurement is difficult. In this study, we estimated the pressure dependence of Rayleigh scattering up to 4 GPa using two methods: computational simulation and experimental Raman spectroscopic analysis. In both methods, it was suggested that scattering decreases with increasing pressure, and that the scattering has minimum around 1-4 GPa.
