Various two- or three-dimensional optical fields can be generated and manipulated by spatial light modulation. This paper focuses on a method for generating optical patterns/beams which are finer than a single light spot obtained in a diffraction-limited system, by designing the distribution of spatial light modulation. We show the principle, characteristics, and applications of the method, and discuss the capability of spatial light modulation techniques from the view point of fine optical-field generation.
