Even in nematic liquid crystal, which has a cylindrical symmetry, the second harmonic generation (SHG) can be observed by the flexoelectric effect. We have induced the flexoelectric polarization by applying an external electric field to In-Plane Switching (IPS) liquid crystal cells and successfully visualized resultant polarization by SH microscopy. In order to verify the origin of the SH image, we have simulated the distribution of the flexoelectric polarization in the IPS cells. The effectiveness of this method has been verified by comparing the distribution of flexoelectric polarization with the obtained SHG images.
