Considering the brain as a physical reservoir, we attempted to quantify the information processing capacity (IPC) of the brain. Based on a framework of reservoir computing theory, we estimated IPC in dissociate cultures of neurons (in vitro) and in the auditory cortex of rat (in vivo) from stimulus-driven spatio-temporal activity patterns.
