Translocation dynamics control has long been a critical issue in a practical use of solid-state nanopores for bioanalytical applications such as single-molecule protein analysis and sequencing by ionic current. In the present study, a novel approach to retard the motions of objects in a nanoscale conduit is demonstrated. It consists of a nanopore surround by a platinum ring that serves as a gate electrode to modulate the surface charge density at the wall. The associated change in the electroosmotic flow was found useful to slowdown the translocation time of virus-sized nanoparticles by a factor of 10000.
