A pump-probe scanning tunneling microscope with a time resolution better than 100 ps was developed, which uses an optical pulse as a pump pulse and a bias voltage pulse as a probe pulse. Pumping with an optical pulse allows us to excite a wide variety of ultrafast phenomena with a possible energy selection ability. In addition, probing with a bias voltage pulse allows us to directly access the instantaneous tunnel current after excitation. Because of these features, the newly developed microscopy will have a very wide range of application.
