This year marks the 50 year anniversary of the thin film and surface physics division (TSPD) and the 20 year anniversary of the ion beam research workshop (formally, the Japanese national workshop on analysis and modification of surfaces and interfaces by ion beams), which has been held annually by TSPD. In this talk, I will introduce the changes in research trends and the latest topics, along with the progress of the ion beam research workshop.
