We calculated the exact time evolution operator of an atomic wave function using a basis set composed of discrete states, including both the bound and the continuum states. We exploit the Kramers–Henneberger frame in which the strong-field-dressed discrete eigenstates are given by the field-free discrete eigenstates which are spatially displaced from the origin. We apply our novel approach to a one-dimensional atom exposed to intense ultrashort laser pulses and compare the results to those obtained from using the Crank–Nicolson method. Although this work is applied to a one-dimensional atom, our method can be applied for studying dynamics of three-dimensional atoms and molecules as well as solid materials exposed to a strong laser field.
