[13a-S301-5] HPHT synthesis and characterization of diamond grains containing cubic boron nitride
Keywords:diamond grain, hpht, cubic boron nitride
We synthesized diamond grains containing boron (B) compounds by adding cBN particles during the synthesis of diamond by the high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) method. We investigated the mechanical strength and the oxidation resistance of the abrasive grains in an air. In addition, we observed the hetero interface by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) to examine the bonding state and studied the constituent elements and chemical bonding state in the local region by Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) and chemical bonding states in the local area.
The results confirm the cBN particles are trapped inside diamond grains. And compared with commercial diamond abrasive grains, this diamond particle were high friability and high oxidation resistance in air. The TEM results show that the bonding relationship between diamond and contained c-BN is not in a specific crystallographic orientation but is via a boron compound or amorphous material.
