Recently, THz-STM has attracted much attention as a method to observe ultrafast phenomena with atomic resolution. In order to observe electron dynamics at femtosecond scale, which is beyond the time resolution of THz-STM, we have been developing a mid-infrared (MIR)-STM using sub-cycle MIR pulses with a shorter pulse duration than THz electric field. In this study, we succeeded in observing ultrafast modulation of the tunneling current less than 20 fs by the mid-infrared pulse, and confirmed that the bandwidth of the incident electric field is maintained.
