▲ [13p-N404-7] Metal Sphere Migration by Laser Irradiation in Glass
Keywords:laser, glass, manipulation
In this presentation, a technique of manipulating small metal spheres in glass is presented. Near-infrared laser illumination heated a metal sphere in glass, and the surrounding glass was also heated by thermal conduction. The heated glass was softened and enabled the metal sphere migration. The metal sphere migrated toward the light source with a speed of up to 100 mm/s. The interfacial tension gradient caused the migration. The temperature of the laser-illuminated side of the sphere was higher than that of the non-illuminated side. The interfacial tension between the melted metal and softened glass decreases with increasing the temperature. The temperature gradient caused an interfacial gradient, and the resultant force of the interfacial tension caused the migration. In the trajectory, the metal component was doped as ion, nonvalent metal and metal nanoparticles.
