[16p-Z21-6] Domain Sorting in Giant Unilamellar Vesicles Adsorbed on Glass
Keywords:phospholipids, supported lipid bilayers, phase separation
Giant unilamellar vesicles consisting of phospholipids adsorb to a solid surface and spontaneously rupture to form a planar bilayer patch. In this study, we investigated the adsorption of vesicles with liquid-ordered and liquid-disordered domains on glass using fluorescence microscopy. Domain sorting occurred after adsorption and the resultant planar bilayer patches after rupture had circular domain patterns. We found that the degree of domain sorting varied with the extent of vesicle deformation. These results suggest that domain sorting occurs to stabilize highly curved membrane regions in the adsorbed vesicles.
