[16p-Z24-17] Fabrication of hydroxyapatite-coated cellulose nanocrystals for dental restorative materials

Dental composite resins have been used as popular materials to restore teeth since their introduction about 60 years ago. Compared with dental amalgam, the treatment period is shorter and possess better esthetic property. However, composite resins have remained some problems such as low mechanical strength and affecting the remaining unreacted monomer to the mucous membrane in the oral cavity. In order to address these issues, we have prepared the hybrid material composed of hydroxyapatite-coated cellulose nanocrystals. We employed cellulose nanocrystals which can be improved mechanical strength due to high aspect ratio, hydroxyapatite occupies 97% of enamel and shows biocompatibility. We attempted to fabricate dental materials with high mechanical strength and non-toxicity using these materials.
