The propagation loss of metal-coated dielectric parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG) was studied theoretically and experimentally in transverse-electric (TE) mode. The physical model was developed for simulating the loss of metal-coated PPWG from the model for all-metallic PPWG. Film thickness dependence on Au-coated PPWG was studied, and conductivity in the coated metal film was the dominant factor. The derived model can be applied for estimating required film thickness for metal-coated dielectric waveguides at an arbitrary frequency, material, and the distance between plates. It is possible to design a low-loss metal-coated dielectric waveguide based on this study.
