A class of single-photon detectors, which count the photogenerated charge or photoinduced polarization one by one by an ultrasensitive electrometer, generally features a small dark count rate (DCR), small noise equivalent power (NEP) and photon-number resolution. In this work, we evaluated the achievable performance of such a single-photon detector in terms of DCR and maximum count rate (MCR), based on the newly developed signal-processing algorithm. Initially, the photogeneration and recombination of single charges are simulated as independent Poisson processes.
