We investigated the adhesion mechanism at the interface between epoxy adhesive and aluminum. Employing SFG, STEM-EELS, and XPS, we found that the protonation of an amine hardener involved the change in the chemical state of Al surface: Al(OH)₃ could be converted to Al₂O₃.
